Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

The Vatican Press Office issued a statement confirming that Pope Francis died due to a stroke and heart failure, with his death also being impacted by other illnesses, including a previous episode of acute respiratory failure, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.

Pope Francis had chronic lung disease and had undergone partial lung removal in his youth. On February 14, he was hospitalized due to respiratory issues, marking the longest hospitalization of his papacy, lasting 38 days.
